BNY Mellon appoints Gabriel Cheung as Hong Kong Head of Trustee

HONG KONG, July 5, 2021 — BNY Mellon has appointed Gabriel Cheung as Director of Asset Servicing and Digital for Asia Pacific, and Head of Trustee in Hong Kong, with immediate effect. Based in Hong Kong, Gabriel reports to Mathew Kathayanat, Head of Product and Strategy, Asia Pacific, who is based in Singapore, and Simon Voss, Head of International Trustee & Depository, who is based in EMEA.

In this newly created role within the International Trustee and Depositary team, Gabriel will be responsible for overall management of trustee services in Hong Kong, partnering with BNY Mellon’s client coverage and business development teams to drive growth and develop products to meet the varied and increasing demands of clients, particularly in the area of new fund structures across Asia Pacific region.

Gabriel has extensive experience in asset servicing industry. He most recently served as Head of Trustee Services for Brown Brothers Harriman in Hong Kong, where he was responsible for establishing, developing and expanding the local trust business. Prior to that, he held a number of senior roles, including senior manager of trustee and fiduciary services at HSBC Global Banking and Markets, Associate General Counsel at AIA Pension and Trustee in Hong Kong and as Registered Foreign Lawyer at Mayer Brown JSM.

Gabriel is qualified as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia, as well as a Certified Trust Practitioner in Hong Kong. He is also the director and member of the executive committee in Hong Kong Trustees’ Association, a non-profit organization enhancing trust professionalism and promoting best practices for the asset servicing industry.
