Atul Jain, global co-head for trade finance and lending of Deutsche Bank was recognised as Transaction Finance Person of the Year for his transformative leadership in turning the bank’s trade finance business into one of its most profitable and innovative segments, and one of the top in Asia Pacific based on financial performance, from 2017 to 2021.

The council of advisors recognised the transformative leadership of Deutsche Bank’s Atul Jain in building the bank as a top trade finance institution in Asia Pacific. Deutsche Bank’s trade finance business is one of the most profitable and innovative segments in the group’s corporate banking, supported by exceptional financial performance during periods of challenging flows and a clear digital engagement strategy.

Since his appointment as the Asia-Pacific head of trade finance and lending business in June 2017, he has successfully leveraged his wider banking and management experience to achieve a turnaround of the business over the last four years, with growth across all key metrics: i.e., market share, volumes, revenue, and profitability whilst fostering innovation.

As a result, from the period 2017 to 2021, direct business revenue increased by more than 50%, while direct business headcount has decreased by more than 50%.

He has focused on structured trade expertise and client service/ advisory excellence as two pillars of his business leadership strategy. Most notably, he has emphasised the need to “do more with less” – i.e. the focus on growing revenues, while reducing costs have translated for the business to achieve fourth consecutive year of revenue growth and record profit in 2021.

He has also led the bank to achieve a notable position in working with customers and their suppliers across complex business mandates in China, India and Pakistan. From supporting suppliers and distributors of anchor global clients in ecosystem financing to having a future-ready vision of supporting customers’ clean energy journey and focus on sustainability in project financing, he has successfully demonstrated a strong vision, verve and fortitude to steer the bank’s trade finance business during highly uncertain times.
