Norway’s central bank latest to disavow CBDC

Norges Bank has announced it will not be introducing a retail or wholesale central bank digital currency, at least for now. 

The governor of Norway’s central bank, Ida Wolden Bache, said on December 10 that a CBDC was “currently not warranted”.

The bank also said in a statement that although tokenisation “enables innovation and efficiency gains and allows for lower settlement risk”, its existing payments system was efficient and secure enough, and tailored to users’ needs.
