Signatories of open letter say CBDC is vital to ensure Europe is not reliant on US payment providers
Seventy academics have signed an open letter calling on European Union institutions to authorise the digital euro, ahead of a critical vote on the central bank digital currency by members of the European parliament (MEPs) later this year.
Amid pushback from leading European banks, the letter – addressed to MEPs and published on January 11 – warns that dependence on US payment providers “exposes European citizens, businesses and governments to geopolitical leverage, foreign commercial interests
