Experts question governor’s affiliations after lawyers petition Supreme Court to have him removed


Dhaka, Bangladesh

Ahsan Habib Mansur’s ousting as governor of Bangladesh Bank has sparked a challenge in the Supreme Court over the legality of the move and triggered further debate among economists about the institution’s independence.

Mansur was replaced on February 25 by Mostaqur Rahman, a chief executive with no prior background in economics or monetary policy. His appointment has faced a backlash in some quarters over his business interests and ties to Bangladesh’s ruling political party.
