
Álvaro Santos Pereira’s “independence” justifies his appointment to top job, says minister

Portugal’s government has chosen Álvaro Santos Pereira to replace Mário Centeno as governor of the country’s central bank.
The council of ministers made its decision on July 24 and minister for parliamentary affairs António Leitão Amaro announced the appointment at a press conference on the same day.
Leitão Amaro justified the government’s choice not to re-appoint Centeno by pointing to the incoming governor’s “independence”. Santos Pereira, he said, did not “come from within the Bank of Portugal
