Research department head is returning to academia

Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas is to step down from his position as chief economist of the International Monetary Fund in July.

The IMF said in a statement today (May 1) that Gourinchas will return to academia at the University of California, Berkeley, effective July 1. He has been on leave from the university since joining the IMF as economic counsellor and director of the research department in 2022.
